Dr. Rob Walcher, a friend, is a professional model in addition to the many other things that he does excellently. He was in town about a month ago, and we agreed to meet at La Jolla Cove to shoot some photos for his portfolio. I made it as a meet-up workshop too. One model, one location, several looks. The general creative direction was to produce the sunny, Southern California look. We took advantage of the variety of backgrounds that contrast and compliment well with his wardrobes. Thus, the predominantly red shirt with the blue sky, the black shirt in the warm greenish rocks, and the purple shirt in the darker rocks. Rob, being a pro, needs extremely minimal direction. When we are ready to shoot, he poses effortlessly, always camera ready. It was textbook flash + ambient mixture, with the aim of preserving as much as highlight details on his shoulders, hair, and background while correctly exposing his face and clothing. The challenges were the gusts of wind, making sure that our off camera flash will not be blown away, plus Rob's hair getting out of place every now and then. It was also challenging for both the model and the photographer to navigate the slippery and uneven terrain, while holding on to our equipment. However, we enjoyed the day creating these images for Doc Rob.
